Deepening engagement: Adding narrative layers to physical spaces.
Z-Arts’ “Down the Rabbit Hole” was a beautifully designed physical walkthrough, but it faced a common challenge for static attractions: how to increase repeat playability and broaden its appeal. SUPERMASSIVE developed the Quest Engine - a sophisticated digital layer that transforms a free-roaming space into an interactive mission. By introducing this layer, we didn’t just change the demographic; we added depth. The software provides a structured narrative “game” on top of the physical environment, creating multiple levels of engagement that make the attraction more compelling for a much wider range of ages and interests.
We developed a system that acts as the “orchestrator” for the visitor experience. Using tablets and AR markers, we gamified the space so visitors can scan objects to solve riddles and trigger AR events. Crucially, the engine features Autonomous Crowd Control; it tracks every group in real-time and dynamically reroutes them to quieter areas to “smooth” the building’s capacity. Built to be IP-agnostic, the system provides a long-term technical asset that can be reskinned for any future exhibition or theme.
Applications & Versatility
The Quest Engine is a great engagement tool for museums, heritage sites, and themed attractions looking to increase dwell time and manage visitor flow without structural renovations. It is the most cost-effective way to “level up” a physical site, turning a “walk-and-look” experience into a high-interest, gamified destination. The system includes a full Operator Dashboard with live heatmapping, allowing venues to monitor engagement and identify bottlenecks in real-time. It is a turnkey solution for adding digital “magic” and operational intelligence to any large-scale public environment.
